Tint Percentages Explained, Simply

5%, 20%, 35%, 70% — what those numbers actually mean when you are standing in the shop.

Tint Percentages Explained, Simply

The number on a tint is its VLT — visible light transmission. It tells you how much light passes through the film. A 5% film lets 5% of light through, which is why people call it limo. A 70% film lets 70% through and is almost invisible.

Here is how it feels in the real world. 5% is a full privacy look; from outside you see nothing, and at night you will rely on your mirrors and cameras more than you expect. 20% is the most popular aggressive choice — dark, clean, still usable after dark. 35% is the balanced pick: clearly tinted, comfortable at night, flattering on almost every paint colour.

50% and 70% are where most people are surprised. They barely change the look of the car, but with ceramic film they still cut a large amount of heat and UV. That is the combination a lot of daily drivers want: comfort without the statement.

Two things influence the final look beyond the number. Your factory glass already has a tint of its own, especially rear windows on SUVs and vans, so the same film reads darker back there. And the angle matters — film always looks darker from the side than head-on.

The best way to choose is not online. Come by, look at the shade samples on your own glass in daylight, and pick the one you will still be happy with in two years.
