Ceramic vs Carbon vs Dyed Tint: What's Best in Ottawa?

A plain-English comparison of the three main tint films, from an Ottawa tinting shop that installs them every week.

Ceramic vs Carbon vs Dyed Tint: What's Best in Ottawa?

Every week someone at the shop asks the same question: what's actually the difference between ceramic, carbon and dyed tint? If you're shopping for tinting in Ottawa, here's the honest answer from the people who install it.

Dyed film is the cheapest. It darkens the glass with a layer of dye, which looks fine at first, but it absorbs heat rather than rejecting it. After a few Ottawa summers it tends to fade to purple and bubble — and then you pay again to have it removed.

Carbon film is the value pick. It has a deep matte black look, doesn't fade, and rejects noticeably more heat than dye. It's what we use for our $199 winter special because it gives a clean, durable result at a great price.

Ceramic film is the top tier. Ceramic particles reject infrared heat while staying optically clear, so even a lighter shade keeps the cabin cooler. It blocks up to 98% of UV, won't interfere with your phone or GPS, and lasts the longest. On a hot day, your steering wheel and seats stay far cooler to the touch.

So which is best in Ottawa? If you keep your car for years and want the most comfort, ceramic. If you want a sharp look and solid performance on a budget, carbon. We don't recommend dyed film — it costs more over the life of the car. Every car tint we install carries a 5-year warranty, whichever film you choose.
